Is forgiveness the key to getting back up after a setback? Fuel your come back

Forgiveness is often touted as a quick decision that once made, can help us move forward with our lives. It is a decision, but it is also woven into a tapestry of emotions that we need to deal with if we are to truly forgive ourselves and others. In the context of hitting rock bottom, forgiveness starts with ourselves. We need to acknowledge how we got there and what role we played in the process. Not from a place of guilt and shame, but one of curiosity and learning.

Curiosity about what, you might ask? Curiosity about what caused you to make the decisions you made. Curiosity about the way you saw yourself then versus how you see yourself now. Curiosity about how you handled the emotions you were going through at the time and how this impacted the choices you made. The list can go on and it helps us take a step back, assess where we're coming from and figure out what to do differently as we move forward and climb back up.

Asking questions from a place of curiosity in a structured way, has helped me get on a path of forgiveness and stay on it. As I move along the path, the weight of unforgiveness is gradually reducing and it has made a visible difference in my health, attitude and daily outlook on life.

Forgiveness is a pathway to freedom. If you can find a safe space to be vulnerable and be supported I encourage you to take the first step today. My choice is therapy, yours can be a counsellor, a coach or trusted friend or relative. The key is to be open and ready to confront pain, let go of the weight of the past, free yourself from the chains of bitterness and resentment, and pave the way for brighter days ahead.

Gift yourself with forgiveness, rewrite the narrative of victimhood and reclaim your power.
