When we experience failure of any kind, it’s tempting to marinate in self pity and shame. We forget that failure is inevitable. It is how we learn about ourselves, others and the world.
Making the decision to try again is easy for some and hard for most of us. We want to try again but it takes a while for us to take action. Why is this so? Because we fear that we’ll fail again and go through the process of recovering and getting back up, yet again. But if we won’t try we’ll never know! So, what can we do to make sure we do not give up?
Below are three essential pieces of advice to assist you in recovering more quickly after a setback:
Mind your emotions
You cannot run away from the emotions typically experienced with failure: anger, disappointment, pain, shame, or regret. These emotions can drown you and hold you hostage in a pit of self pity. It is important to acknowledge them and let them pass through you by finding a healthy outlet. Prayer, physical activity, and journaling are helpful ways to let them go.
Minding your emotions is key to helping you maintain an objective perspective of what happened and stay focused on moving forward.
Mind your step
You have got to be intentional about your next move. This means picking out the lessons you’ve learned and using them to inform your strategy this time around. Having a plan which incorporates what could go wrong will give you the direction you need to stay committed and focused.
Mind your business
Guess what? There will be people who will give you a running commentary of their opinion on your experience! Don’t give them free tickets! Set boundaries around the type of feedback you want to receive and from whom. Remember, ‘you will never reach your destination if you stop to throw stones at every dog that barks’ - Winston Churchill.
Failure is an experience that comes with valuable life lessons and an opportunity for personal growth.
Next time you experience failure remember this, and never allow yourself to think you are a failure.
